Ana Soraya Marques
Ana Soraya R. C. Marques é bióloga e paleontóloga angolana, com uma formação e percurso profissional que cruzam ciência, museologia e divulgação científica. É Diretora do Museu Nacional de História Natural de Angola desde abril de 2025, cargo em que lidera o desenvolvimento estratégico, científico e educativo da instituição, coordenando a gestão das coleções, o planeamento de exposições, a criação de parcerias internacionais e ações de mediação científica junto do público.
É mestre em Paleontologia pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2024), com uma dissertação dedicada à descrição anatómica e análise filogenética de um novo crânio de dicinodonte da Formação K5 do Graben de Metangula (Moçambique), e licenciada em Biologia pela Universidade de Évora (2020). Possui ainda um bacharelato em Ambiente e Gestão de Território pela Universidade Metodista de Angola (2012) e frequentou um curso intensivo em Ciências Evolutivas no Turkana Basin Institute, Quénia (2013), afiliado à Stony Brook University (EUA).
Entre 2012 e 2024 integrou o Projeto PaleoAngola, colaborando em expedições científicas de prospeção e escavação de fósseis nas províncias do Bengo, Namibe, Benguela e Cabinda, e participando na montagem de exposições em instituições de renome, como o Smithsonian Institution (EUA) e o Natuurhistorisch Museum (Países Baixos). Destaca-se o seu envolvimento no projeto Mosassaurus 3D (2024), que combinou técnicas de tomografia computorizada e impressão 3D para reconstruir um esqueleto de 11 metros.
Trabalhou também como técnica de laboratório no Dino Parque da Lourinhã (Portugal, 2022–2024), onde participou na preparação, conservação e reconstituição de fósseis de dinossauros e crocodilomorfos, coordenando atividades laboratoriais e de divulgação científica. Colaborou ainda com a Sociedade de História Natural de Torres Vedras e com a Fundação Kissama, em projetos de conservação da biodiversidade e educação ambiental.
Possui diversas formações complementares em curadoria de coleções de história natural, histologia de fósseis, filogenia, e gestão museológica, realizadas em instituições como o Naturalis Biodiversity Centre (Leiden) e a Universidade de Bonn. É fluente em português e inglês, com domínio intermédio de espanhol.
A sua produção científica inclui comunicações em congressos internacionais de paleontologia, nomeadamente no Encontro de Jovens Investigadores em Paleontologia (EJIP), no Congresso da APPBG e no Paleo Spring Meeting, bem como publicações previstas no Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. Tem participado ativamente em iniciativas de divulgação científica e educação, como oficinas e exposições no Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva e em festivais culturais como o Artes à Rua (Évora).
Além da investigação científica, Ana Soraya Marques tem uma expressiva ligação às artes e à performance. Formada em dança clássica e contemporânea, participou em vários projetos artísticos e performativos em Angola e Portugal, explorando o diálogo entre ciência, arte e movimento.
O seu percurso revela uma profissional multifacetada, comprometida com a integração entre ciência, património e cultura, e com a valorização da paleontologia angolana no contexto internacional.
Ana Soraya R. C. Marques is an Angolan biologist and paleontologist whose academic and professional background bridges science, museology, and science communication. She has been Director of the National Museum of Natural History of Angola since April 2025, a position in which she leads the institution’s strategic, scientific, and educational development, overseeing collections management, exhibition planning, the creation of international partnerships, and science outreach initiatives for the public.
She holds a Master’s degree in Paleontology from NOVA University Lisbon (2024), with a dissertation focused on the anatomical description and phylogenetic analysis of a new dicynodont skull from the K5 Formation of the Metangula Graben (Mozambique), and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Évora (2020). She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environment and Land Management from the Methodist University of Angola (2012) and attended an intensive course in Evolutionary Sciences at the Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya (2013), affiliated with Stony Brook University (USA).
Between 2012 and 2024, she was a member of the PaleoAngola Project, participating in scientific expeditions for fossil prospecting and excavation in the provinces of Bengo, Namibe, Benguela, and Cabinda, and contributing to the preparation of exhibitions in renowned institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution (USA) and the Natuurhistorisch Museum (Netherlands). Notably, she was involved in the Mosassaurus 3D Project (2024), which combined computed tomography and 3D printing techniques to reconstruct an 11-meter skeleton.
She also worked as a laboratory technician at the Dino Parque da Lourinhã (Portugal, 2022–2024), where she participated in the preparation, conservation, and reconstruction of dinosaur and crocodylomorph fossils, while coordinating laboratory and science communication activities. She has collaborated with the Natural History Society of Torres Vedras and the Kissama Foundation on biodiversity conservation and environmental education projects.
Ana Soraya has undertaken various specialized training programs in natural history collections curation, fossil histology, phylogeny, and museum management at institutions such as the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre (Leiden) and the University of Bonn. She is fluent in Portuguese and English, with intermediate proficiency in Spanish.
Her scientific output includes presentations at international paleontology conferences, such as the Meeting of Young Researchers in Paleontology (EJIP), the APPBG Congress, and the Paleo Spring Meeting, as well as forthcoming publications in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. She has actively engaged in science outreach and education initiatives, including workshops and exhibitions at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva and at cultural events such as Artes à Rua (Évora).
Beyond scientific research, Ana Soraya Marques maintains a strong connection with the arts and performance. Trained in classical and contemporary dance, she has participated in several artistic and performative projects in Angola and Portugal, exploring the dialogue between science, art, and movement.
