Maria do Mar Gago
Maria do Mar Gago é historiadora da ciência e da tecnologia e afiliada ao Instituto de História Contemporânea (NOVA FCSH). Formou-se como bióloga, mas desde cedo se apercebeu de que não poderia compreender a prática contemporânea da ciência sem estudar a sua história. A sua tese de doutoramento, “Robusta Empire: Coffee, Scientists and the Making of Colonial Angola (1898-1961)“, reúne a história da ciência e da tecnologia, a história ambiental e a história imperial para produzir uma narrativa matizada do café Robusta e do colonialismo português em Angola. O seu projecto actual explora ainda mais as formas como o café e os cientistas moldaram a ordem social e política, mas desta vez a partir de uma perspectiva transnacional para além do caso português. Os seus interesses anteriores incluem a relação entre a ciência e o regime autoritário de António Salazar.
Maria do Mar Gago is a historian of science and technology and an affiliate of the Institute of Contemporary History (NOVA FCSH). She trained as a biologist but soon realised that she could not understand contemporary scientific practice without studying its history. Her doctoral thesis, “Robusta Empire: Coffee, Scientists and the Making of Colonial Angola (1898-1961),” combines the history of science and technology, environmental history, and imperial history to produce a nuanced narrative of Robusta coffee and Portuguese colonialism in Angola. Her current project further explores how coffee and scientists shaped social and political order, this time from a transnational perspective beyond the Portuguese case. Her earlier interests include the relationship between science and António Salazar’s authoritarian regime.
