Ana Rita Amaral
Ana Rita Amaral é antropóloga social, atuando nas áreas de história, museus e estudos religiosos. Sua especialização regional é na África Centro-Ocidental, particularmente na atual Angola. Como integrante da equipe KnowAfrica, continua seu trabalho sobre a vida e o arquivo de A.F.F. da Silva Porto (1817-1890), um comerciante de longa distância que passou a maior parte de sua vida nos planaltos centrais do interior de Benguela. O arquivo multifacetado de Silva Porto oferece um estudo de caso comparativo e complementar à pesquisa da equipe sobre as narrativas produzidas por exploradores do século XIX na mesma região. Rita iniciou essa pesquisa enquanto trabalhava como bolsista de pós-doutorado no International Studies Group da University of the Free State, na África do Sul (2018-2022). Atualmente, é investigadora pós-doutoral no Departamento de Filosofia e Estudos Religiosos da Universidade de Utrecht, contribuindo para o projeto Pressing Matter: Ownership, Value and the Question of Colonial Heritage in Museums. Seu trabalho neste projeto se baseia em sua tese de doutorado (U. Lisboa, 2018), que foca nas atividades de coleta dos missionários católicos holandeses em Angola durante o período colonial, examinando as coleções hoje preservadas no Wereldmuseum.
Ana Rita Amaral is a social anthropologist working across the fields of history, museums, and religious studies. Her regional expertise lies in West Central Africa, particularly today’s Angola. As a member of the KnowAfrica team, she continues her work on the life and archive of A.F.F. da Silva Porto (1817-1890), a long-distance trader who spent most of his life in the central highlands in the interior of Benguela. Silva Porto’s multifaceted archive offers a comparative and complementary case study to the team’s research on the narratives produced by nineteenth-century explorers in the same region. Rita initiated this research while working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the International Studies Group at the University of the Free State in South Africa (2018-2022). She is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University, contributing to the larger project Pressing Matter: Ownership, Value and the Question of Colonial Heritage in Museums. Her work in this project builds on her doctoral thesis (U.Lisbon, 2018), focusing on the collecting activities of Dutch Catholic missionaries in Angola during the colonial period and examining the collections housed in the Wereldmuseum today.
